Week Ahead

It’s been almost a year since a committee dedicated to digital health in the Food and Drug Administration last met, but members will reconvene next week to discuss medical devices that act as artificial intelligence therapists.

We’ll be watching to learn where the Digital Health Advisory Committee — which consists of FDA employees and representatives of medical organizations — stands on using generative AI tools to treat mental health disorders and whether the agency is looking to approve technology for that purpose.

Key context: The U.S. has yet to pass federal legislation to regulate AI and has provided no guidelines for medical companies introducing features for patients and providers that rely on the technology.
