Seventy-five percent to 80 percent of care received by community-dwelling older adults comes from family members or friends, most of whom are unpaid. On average, family caregivers provide 17 hours of care per week, which is notable given that 40 percent also work full time.

This work can elicit contradictory emotions. On one hand, caregiving can provide a strong sense of purpose, enjoyment in reciprocating care for loved ones, and an opportunity for personal growth. On the other hand, caregiving can increase stress, depression, and financial strain for the caregiver.
