In today’s column, I explore a longstanding thorny topic that ethicists have been bandying back and forth for quite a while, specifically known as the doctrine of double effect (DDE). The purpose here is to briskly get the doctrine onto the table and showcase that it is pertinent to those pursuing advances in AI. The odds are that no matter whether you accept the doctrine or reject it, there is still worthwhile food for thought that the matter brings to the surface.
