On January 20, the White House issued the executive order “Ending Radical and Wasteful Government DEI Programs and Preferences,” requiring the termination of “diversity, equity, and inclusion” (DEI) programs by both the federal government and recipients of federal grants and contracts. On February 14, the Department of Education reiterated the same calls in a Dear Colleague letter to educational institutions, further claiming that DEI practices discriminate against “White and Asian” students.

The letter referenced the US Supreme Court’s 2023 decision in Students for Fair Admissions (SFFA) v. Harvard, in which the court ruled—despite a lack of substantive evidence—that affirmative action policies engage in anti-Asian discrimination.
