Nearly four in five acute care nurses report losing time to unproductive charting each week, a documentation burden that correlates directly with heightened burnout and turnover risk at a time when 40% of nurses intend to leave the profession by 2029, according to a new report from the KLAS Arch Collaborative.
The December 2025 report, based on responses from 80,147 acute care nurses surveyed between September 2022 and September 2025, reveals that reducing or streamlining documentation ranks as the top EHR enhancement request among nurses—cited twice as frequently as any other improvement. Among nurses who spend three or more hours weekly on unproductive charting, 46% report experiencing burnout and 34% say they are likely to leave their organization.
