Physicians in ambulatory care settings are increasingly overwhelmed by the volume of electronic messages from patients, a new report finds, fueling burnout and threatening the efficiency of healthcare delivery.
According to the report “Message Burden 2025”, released by KLAS Research, 59% of patients now use digital messaging to communicate with their provider’s office before or after visits, and 93% of those patients intend to continue doing so. While technology has made healthcare more accessible, it has also placed a significant strain on physicians, particularly those in ambulatory care.
“Many physicians feel like they’re constantly falling behind on messages,” the report said. “Self-imposed expectations to respond quickly are making the problem worse.”
