Since its formation in 1961, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has relieved suffering and saved lives during natural disasters, armed conflict, health emergencies, and famines. Through its work, hungry children are nourished and avoid stunting, sick patients with AIDS receive lifesaving medications, women are educated, and infectious diseases like avian influenza are monitored and contained. USAID promotes democracy, good governance, and the rule of law—all core American values. Its grants often support US businesses and NGOs, such as nutrient-rich food research and production.
