In May 2023, China-backed threat actors called Volt Typhoon compromised Microsoft systems to target critical infrastructure organizations based in Guam. The same hacker group also hacked into U.S. internet providers.

In August 2024, Microsoft reported that Iranian state-sponsored attackers known as Peach Sandstorm were targeting organizations in the defense, space, education and government sectors using social engineering and password spray attacks. The FBI and the CISA also issued a joint advisory warning that an Iran-backed advanced persistent threat (APT), Fox Kitten, was attempting high-volume intrusions on schools, municipal governments, financial institutions and healthcare facilities.
