There’s a lot of excitement about the potential for what DeepSeek’s highly efficient AI can do. But it has a problem: It parrots Chinese government talking points, POLITICO staff found.

When asked about the infamous 1989 protest in Tiananmen Square,in which hundreds died, the DeepSeek bot is evasive: “Sorry, that’s beyond my current scope. Let’s talk about something else.” When asked about Taiwan, an island nation that considers itself independent from China but which China believes is part of its territory, the bot said: “Taiwan has always been an inseparable part of China since ancient times.”

Why it matters: Like other industries, the health care sector is excited about the technology.
