According to a May 2024 Gartner, Inc. study (subscription required), data breaches in application programming interfaces (APIs) are on the rise. As the volume of shared data across organizational boundaries increases, APIs are becoming more susceptible to data leakage.
The growing number of APIs has also led to the emergence of shadow and dormant APIs, which pose a significant risk by allowing unauthorized access to private data. This heightened vulnerability has made APIs one of the most prevalent targets in cybersecurity attacks, primarily public APIs that expose private consumer data to third parties.
