Perhaps lost on the list of 3,600 federal health workers dismissed over the weekend, were officials working on artificial intelligence and technology at the Food and Drug Administration, POLITICO’s Adam Cancryn, Megan Messerly and David Lim report.

The firings come at a crucial time for the agency, which is grappling with how to handle the growing AI health field and as the federal government considers the rules that will govern health care.

The FDA has authorized roughly 1,000 AI-enabled medical devices, which present unique challenges for the agency. AI can change over time and while FDA guidance on AI is meant to be updated, the agency has limited ability to monitor the technology once it’s on the market.
