As the COVID-19 pandemic spreads throughout the United States, health care professionals on the frontlines are fighting a novel pathogen that emerged out of China in late 2019. To date, no vaccine is available, and evidence-based treatment guidelines specific to COVID-19 have yet to be established.

To add to the chaos, in some COVID-19 hot spots health care professionals are treating patients without an adequate supply of personal protective equipment (PPE) and are running short on the medicines needed to place COVID-19 patients on ventilators. Drugs such as hydroxychloroquine have been approved for off-label use by the Food and Drug Administration, but some health officials and physicians are concerned about its widespread use without the benefit of successful clinical trials....
