Emissions from the health care sector are estimated to represent about 5 percent of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Despite the magnitude of health care’s climate footprint, change has been frustratingly slow and has lagged behind other sectors. The significant threats from climate change have prompted many other industries to track environmental, social, and governance data and to voluntarily disclose climate-related impacts, including GHG emissions, solid waste, and water use; 96 percent of S&P 500 companies publish sustainability reports. Yet, in the health sector, attempts to accelerate adaptation and mitigation efforts have been relegated to one-off projects at the hospital level, which are likely insufficient to reach GHG reduction goals and are often not sustained.
