A study of Medicaid beneficiaries in Michigan found that participation in the program was associated with a significant reduction in preterm births among Black women.

Disparities in birth outcomes are among the thorniest equity issues in health care: the rate of preterm births is 14.4% for the Black population,10% for Hispanic population and 9.3% for the white one.

Home visits by community health workers during and after pregnancy in underserved communities can help narrow the gap. But programs vary significantly, and studies have had mixed results. Medicaid covers more than 40% of all births in the United States, and far higher proportions of Black and Hispanic births.
