Imagine having many years of experience in several different careers. Let’s say you have successfully raised children, run a business, received a graduate degree, maybe served the Peace Corps or climbed Mount Everest. You can look back on a life filled with growth, excitement, challenge and resilience.

Now slap the word “retired” or “senior” in front of those achievements. In many circumstances, that one word robs all the rest of their meaning, reducing a full life to a one-dimensional stereotype.

The stereotypes we see related to seniors often portray older adults as reclusive, less productive or resistant to change, even grouchy or afraid. As a person who regularly interacts with people in their later decades, all I can say is...
