In 2024, the U.S. total health expenditures experienced the swiftest growth since 1991, according to the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

National health care spending reached $5.3 trillion in 2024, up 7.2% year over year. In 2023, those expenditures rose by 7.4%. The 2024 amount represents a cost of $15,474 per person and represents 18% of the U.S. economy. The rate of spending in 2024 grew faster than the nation’s gross domestic product, which rose by 5.3%.
