Executive Summary

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) launched the Bundled Payments for Care Improvement (BPCI) initiative under the authority of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI). The BPCI initiative tests four Models for linking provider payments for a clinical episode of care to determine whether bundled payments can reduce Medicare payments while maintaining or improving quality of care. The voluntary initiative is designed to allow participants to choose among several key options such as payment approach, type of clinical episode, and episode definitions.
