Health system CIOs are leaning into outside expertise even as financial pressures mount, with a strong majority planning to hold or increase spending on health IT professional services over the next year, a new KLAS report finds. The study, based on interviews with 105 CIOs from February through August 2025, points to growing reliance on firms that can help organizations extract more value from core systems, shore up cybersecurity, and chart a path for AI and automation.

Overall, 52% of CIOs expect to increase their consulting and services spend in the coming 12 months, while 37% plan to keep budgets roughly flat and just 12% anticipate cuts, according to the report. The findings suggest that even as leaders grapple with...
