CHIME recommended data standards and acknowledged current patient matching concerns that can be mitigated with the national patient identifier.

CHIME has issued a letter in support of a national patient identifier (NPI) to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), on the need for accurate patient matching, patient identification, and data standards.

This comes on the heels of the US House of Representatives’ approval to the bipartisan Foster-Kelly Amendment, removing Section 1510 of the Labor-HHS bill that prohibits the use of federal funds for the adoption of the NPI.

Patient matching intends to link patient data across separate medical facilities. The same patient visiting two different doctors or providers should always have the correct medical record...
