In today’s column, I examine a new AI law that was enacted last year in California and has now been activated as we get going into 2026. The law is known as SB-243 and covers the role of AI companions.
You probably know that an AI companion is when AI attempts to become your best friend. There is generalized AI, such as ChatGPT, that might seek to be your AI companion, though it does a lot of other things too. There are specialized LLMs that serve only as an AI companion and don’t do anything else. Overall, worries are that some people will use these AI companions and fall under their spell.
