One of the boldest emerging sciences is the field of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). Broadly speaking, BCIs are essentially tools by which brain signals and thoughts can be relayed into tangible outputs independent of a person’s native muscular functions. The most cited use-case for this technology is often as a means to restore and provide function to patients that have neuromuscular disorders such as cerebral palsy or have been afflicted by paralyzing conditions, such as stroke. In theory, by using a BCI, these patients may be able to effectuate tangible action through the device solely through thought—that is, by relaying a brain signal to a specific output device.
