Here’s a prescription. Can’t sleep? Try this pill. Even kids with sprained ankles are sent home with bottles of medication.

Pharmaceuticals have saved lives, no question. But we’ve also built a healthcare culture where drugs are often the first (and sometimes only) line of defense. That approach comes with a cost: side effects, dependency, and a growing sense among patients that they’re managing conditions, not actually healing.
