Frustrated with a lack of progress on protecting kids online, tech industry critics hope a series of ballot initiatives in California can curb tech titans’ ballooning political influence and drive new artificial intelligence safety controls.
It’s not just in California — tech companies have sidelined efforts to put guardrails around their online platforms nationally. Last year, Apple helped quash a provision in a Louisiana bill that would have required it to prevent minors from downloading certain apps. Tech companies also successfully derailed the 2024 Kids Online Safety Act, which would have required companies to design their platforms with children’s best interests in mind.
