The average star rating for Medicare Advantage plans decreased for 2023, after CMS implemented methodology changes in the way contracts are rated and ended most pandemic-era provisions.

According to a fact sheet published Oct. 6 by CMS, the average rating across all plans for 2023 is 4.15, down from 4.37 in 2022. The average rating in 2021 was 4.06, and 4.16 in 2020.

A total of 57 Medicare Advantage contracts received five-star ratings, down from 74 in 2022. There were 67 plans in the 4.5 star category,...
