In today’s column, I examine an existing formalized evaluation approach for selecting mental health apps. The approach is promulgated by the American Psychiatric Association (APA). Various steps have been identified by the APA as a guide to choosing which mental health app might be best for a given circumstance at hand.

I offer in this discussion my recommendations on how to augment the APA app evaluation framework to include assessing AI-based mental health capabilities. The existing APA approach doesn’t robustly call out the AI side of things, and though perhaps not a necessity per se, would seem highly beneficial in this pervasive era of generative AI and large language models (LLMs) serving as mental health advisory tools.
