At the Digital Hollywood sessions ahead of the opening of the 2025 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, leaders in technology and entertainment discussed current trends in generative AI in the production industry, including the rapid evolution of tools that promise – and threaten – to disrupt Hollywood’s creative industry.

Ed Ulbrich, a longtime visual effects producer (Hear, Top Gun: Maverick) and CCO of Metaphysic, noted that movies have been using a version of AI since he and other SFX wizards aged and de-aged Brad Pitt in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), but that the rapidly accelerating capabilities of the current generation of tools “has some people nervous” about potential job losses in creative fields.
