Ascension gets green light from Illinois board to pursue Prime sale

It’s a major step forward for the nine-hospital deal, which has faced pushback from some residents and a union.

Ascension got the green light this week from an Illinois state board to sell nine hospitals and four care sites to Prime Healthcare for approximately $375 million.
Should the deal close as expected at the end of the year, Prime has pledged to invest $250 million into developing the facilities and agreed to keep the majority open for at least three years.
However, the for-profit health system is seeking approval to close 40-bed Ascension St. Elizabeth — a move that Ascension supports, according to a spokesperson.
