As far as product launches go, it was light years from Steve Jobs intoning “it’s an iPod, a phone, and an internet communicator…are you getting it?” when he announced the iPhone in 2007. It wasn’t even as exciting as last year’s Meta Connect, when the Orion glasses were announced to loud cheers. But although the event was more subdued and plagued by demos failing to work, last night’s Meta Connect event marked a turning point, with the announcement of the Meta Ray-Bans Display glasses.

Smart glasses have been “coming” for years now. Google Glasses were launched in 2012 to much hype, with some tech bloggers going so far as wearing them in the shower and San Francisco bars banning customers...
