Apple revealed Sept. 10 that it will conduct three new medical studies in partnership with academic and research institutions.

The studies will be available to iPhone and Apple Watch users through the new Research app, which is designed to allow patients to contribute to medical discoveries and healthcare innovation. The Research app will be available as a free download to users later this year.

“With the Apple Heart Study, we found that we could positively impact medical research in ways that help patients today and that make contributions that will benefit future generations,” said Jeff Williams, Apple’s COO. “[This] announcement carries our commitment to health even further by engaging with participants on a larger scale than ever before.”
