Pharmacists are leading the way in personalized medicine through strategic pharmacogenetic implementation.

Pharmacy Times® interviewed Kelsey Cook, PharmD, BCPS, clinical assistant professor at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy, on her presentation at the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Annual Meeting & Exposition.

Cook discussed the importance of pharmacogenetics (PGx) resources like Clinical Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium (CPIC) guidelines and PharmGKB, which help guide medication selection and dosing based on genetic information. She highlighted significant barriers to PGx implementation, including limited provider education and insurance reimbursement challenges. Cook explained how genetic testing can reveal how patients metabolize drugs differently, potentially improving treatment outcomes.
