Electronic Health Record adoption has increased dramatically in the five years since the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was passed and soon, EHRs will be ubiquitous in the delivery of care. As EHRs have become broadly adopted, it has become clear that EHRs need to evolve if they are to achieve their potential to improve care and care delivery and to meet providers’ expectations for usability, general satisfaction and productivity. For these reasons, this is an opportune time to reflect on current status of EHRs, needed directions and what AMIA should be doing to shape that future.
