The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation announced plans last month to begin the Wasteful and Inappropriate Service Reduction (WISeR) Model in Medicare in 2026. Under this six-year demonstration project, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will let for-profit contractors use artificial intelligence tools to determine treatment protocols for the elderly and certain disabled groups enrolled in traditional Medicare.

By piloting WISeR, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is implementing a policy that has been adopted in the privately run alternative to original Medicare called Medicare Advantage. Roughly 54% of seniors and qualified disabled folks are enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans, often attracted to the program because of the low premiums and supplemental benefits.
