There is a long-running debate in management about the boundaries of the firm. The proliferation of multi-sided platforms impacted this debate. The rise of AI will do so again.
Every summer, the Academy of Management holds its annual conference where 5,000 – 10,000 business professors and researchers gather to share ideas. For the past five years, I have hosted a symposium comprised of some of the world’s best thinkers about multi-sided platforms. In Chicago in August 2024, the panel included Liz Altman from the University of Massachusetts Lowell, Annabelle Gawer from the University of Surrey, Grace Gu from the University of Southern California, and Marshall Van Alstyne from Boston University.
