With San Diego-based Equip, Kristina Saffran has convinced health insurers from UnitedHealthcare to Aetna to pay for research-backed treatment for thousands of patients struggling with eating disorders.
Kristina Saffran was first diagnosed with anorexia at 10 years old. She cycled through different hospital programs only to return home and fall back into the same destructive behaviors. “I didn’t know how to take care of myself, nor did my family,” Saffran told Forbes. Doctors informed her parents she didn’t have much hope for recovery but they could send her across the country to a residential treatment center. “It’s pretty awful to tell a 13-year-old you’re going to live with this forever,” she said.
