The treatment of pain in the United States is a major public health issue. Our current treatments are inadequate, and the consequences are deadly. A key strategy must be safe and effective non-opioid therapies for the 100 million Americans who suffer from chronic pain. The misuse of opioids cost lives, but the other equally important issue is the problem of untreated pain. Untreated pain leads to lost work, depression, lack of sleep, social withdrawal, and may even lead to suicide.

There are three obstacles to faster development and deployment of non-addictive pain treatments. They are the business environment, the regulatory environment, and the reimbursement environment.
