Undocumented communities are fearful of accessing care. This fear has been amplified in the current sociopolitical climate with the enactment of the “public charge,” expansion of immigration enforcement activities, and news stories of undocumented immigrants being arrested at or near health care facilities. The current COVID-19 pandemic is further shining a spotlight on these inequities, with immigrants having emerged as disparately affected.
Concurrently, there has been a rapid shift to telehealth prompted by stay-at-home orders, social distancing measures, payment parity between in-person and telehealth visits, and relaxation of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) privacy rules.
