Maternal mortality rates in the US have continued to worsen over time, and 23 percent of pregnancy-related deaths were caused by mental health conditions and deemed preventable. Furthermore, Black, Indigenous, people of color (BIPOC) have disproportionately higher rates of maternal mortality. Here, we explore current federal and state policies aimed at addressing perinatal mental health. Additionally, we provide insight on critical care gaps for perinatal mental health conditions and the lack of availability and diversity of the mental health workforce from a national perspective.
