In 2020, Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance Marketplace premiums will increase for significant segments of the currently enrolled population. This is because gross premiums are decreasing in the ACA Marketplaces for the second year in a row. In a recent Health Affairs blog post, Katie Keith noted the following statement from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS):

“Premiums are expected to drop by 4 percent for a 27-year-old for a silver benchmark Marketplace plan sold through HealthCare.gov. The (unsubsidized) average benchmark plan premium for a 27-year-old will be $388/month for 2020. This is compared to a drop of about 1 percent in the silver benchmark premium and premiums of $406/month for 2019.”
