Home health agencies that do not have electronic health record (EHR) systems in place are at a disadvantage, but many still lack this technology, according to a recent study published in the National Library of Medicine.

Among a sample of more than 1,500 Medicare home health providers, about 10% did not use EHRs. Some instead used paper and pencil for clinical documentation, while others explored other means of transmitting patients’ health information, such as by using telephone calls. EHR tools, however, were found to be the most effective, while the alternatives led to challenges for the providers and the patients they served.
