To date, more than 120 physicians have become eligible for the internal medicine exam

The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) recently launched a pilot pathway to certification for international medical graduates (IMGs) who completed residency abroad.

Eligible participants must have completed at least 3 years of internal medicine training abroad, according to ABIM, as well as an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited fellowship in an ABIM subspecialty.

They also must have met qualifications to be considered an “exceptionally qualified candidate” per ACGME criteria or entered fellowship as a graduate of an ACGME-I residency program, the organization noted. And they must hold a valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate.
