Engineers at the University of California, San Diego, have developed an inexpensive and accurate method for measuring blood pressure with a smartphone. All it takes is a simple clip.

The Problem

Blood pressure is one of the basic parameters for assessing the health of the cardiovascular system, including diagnosing hypertension – a disease that kills 9.4 million people every year, according to WHO data. The challenge is that only a fraction of patients see a doctor for preventive research, and professional devices for taking measurements at home are relatively expensive.
