Lawmakers are pulling kids’ online safety into their controversial plan to block state rules on artificial intelligence, Ruth and POLITICO’s Brendan Bordelon report.

Parents and children’s advocacy groups have been pushing for several years to get Congress to pass laws that would protect children from the addictive features common to social media platforms and unsavory experiences like online bullying and sexual exploitation. Tech companies have effectively lobbied against those bills. GOP leaders are now looking to get Democrats on board with their effort to choke state AI laws in exchange for online protections.

The plan is to attach the whole package to the year-end defense bill.
