Primary care requires a workforce that can meet the demands of the health care needs of the nation. However, there continues to be a shortage of primary care physicians and it’s predicted that it will get worse. For the past decade, we have tracked primary care workforce numbers comparing the primary care US residency match data, focusing on US medical school primary care residency matches, and primary care nurse practitioner (NP) graduates (2013), (2014), (2015), (2016), and (2018). In each of those reports, the primary care physician numbers remained relatively flat while the NP numbers surged.
