Continuous glucose monitors are small, wearable devices that track blood sugar levels in real-time. While the devices are commonly prescribed to diabetics to titrate medications (e.g. insulin) to keep blood sugar levels stable, they are now gaining traction among people without diabetes to optimize health and wellness.

In March 2024, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cleared Dexcom’s Stelo as the first over-the-counter continuous glucose monitor available without a prescription. In June 2024, FDA cleared Abbott’s Lingo. The monitors cost from $83 to $99 per month out-of-pocket, depending on how many devices are purchased. Other versions of continuous glucose monitors are available by prescription for people with diabetes and are commonly covered by insurance .
