Senators ask FDA, National Institutes of Health for a progress report.

Top brass at the FDA and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) spoke of the progress they’ve made since the 21st Century Cures Act was passed 1 year ago, during a Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee hearing on Thursday.

The primary aim of the bill was to accelerate the development of new therapies and cures for hard-to-treat diseases.

At the hearing, Democrats argued to boost funding for the NIH and the FDA, but Committee Chairman Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) panned the idea, saying that his committee cannot “usually” appropriate money.

In short, the Appropriation’s Committee is “the money committee.”
