Approximately one in 25 adults in the U.S. experience serious mental illness; and globally around 450 million people live with mental health disorders, which are among the leading causes of ill-health and disability worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) has focused international attention on this major societal problem through its Mental Health Action Plan 2013 – 2020 and set a goal of accelerated implementation of the WHO Special Initiative for Mental Health through 2023. We will continue to see an ever-increasing need for the advancement of policies, advocacy, and integrated services for people living with mental health conditions.
