A number of retail chains that have been trying to move into primary care have been retrenching or withdrawing altogether. Despite their struggles, there is a place for retail chains in health care. But to secure it, they will have to overhaul their strategies. Doing so entails making primary care a core business, expanding into rural and suburban communities, moving into more complex care with higher margins, and partnering with other providers.
