Hospitals with more inpatient nurse practitioners have lower surgical mortality, lower cost of care, and more satisfied patients, research finds.
Nurse practitioners (NPs) are registered nurses (RNs) with advanced graduate education and expanded legal scope of practice to prescribe treatments including pain medications.
Researchers at the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania studied more than 1.4 million patients in 579 hospitals. Their findings appear in the journal Medical Care.
