UnitedHealth Group is investing more than $8 million into a consortium of historically black colleges and universities to meet the growing demand for data analytics experts.

The $8.25 million investment by the nation’s largest health insurer will be made over five years to the Atlanta University Center Consortium, which includes Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine and Spelman College.

The money will fund the launch of a new AUCC Data Science Initiative, which “will offer technical classes for students who want to specialize in data science or learn data analysis to give them a competitive edge when they look for jobs in their field of study,” UnitedHealth said in an announcement Tuesday.
