Several months ago, I wrote in this space about an “odd couple” on the health care scene — private equity and medical practice.
Although this phenomenon is just beginning to fly above the radar in terms of media coverage, its eventual effect on the healthcare delivery business model and clinical quality outcomes may be profound.
Private equity buyouts began with specialty practice niches such as ophthalmology and dentistry; my previous column was triggered by news that they had spread to primary care/multispecialty practices with the goal of profiting from risk contracts under which they would manage care for Medicare Advantage and Medicaid patients.
